Question:

“I know it shouldn’t be a concern, but our son doesn’t cry. Not sure if he was born with the “I’m super laid back” syndrome or what, but we’ve only heard him really cry 2 times in the past 8 days. When he is hungry, he whimpers and sucks his hands/ smacks his lips, but doesn’t cry. He doesn’t cry when he goes down for his nap. He doesn’t cry when he’s wet/dirty. I’m hoping he’s just a really good baby :) .. what do you think???”

Answer:

“Crying is tied first to: temperament, second, to hunger or comfort need, third to ailment, (reflux, colic, pain). If the second and third ones are not issues than temperament becomes the dominate force. Therefore if he is passive in his crying, good news bad news. The good news is he becomes a self-soother early on, the bad news, you need to watch him more closely because his contentment may turn into complacency when not feeling well. Make sure you are feeding often enough - that is another potential issue for the baby that doesn’t cry much, it’s easy to let them sleep thereby not receiving adequate nourishment. Make sure he is receiving 8 - 10 feeds in a 24 hour cycle.”
